Mobile Page Load Speed May Be Killing Your Search Ranking

When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), Google is the undisputed king of the hill. The search giant dominates the search engine market, accounting for more than 90% of all searches. This means that any website that wants to be successful must pay close attention to Google’s ranking factors. 

One of the most important ranking factors that Google considers is the loading speed of a website. The loading speed of a website is the time it takes for a website to fully load its content, including images, text, and videos. This factor is particularly important for mobile websites because mobile devices often have slower internet connections. 

As the use of smartphones has grown over the years, in many cases replacing home computers for many users, mobile websites and the speed with which they load has become an essential component of how Google ranks a site in organic search returns. Though a site may otherwise be deemed well put together from an SEO standpoint, it’s ranking in organic search may be suffering due to slow page load speeds. 

Google has made it clear that loading speed is a critical factor in determining the ranking of a website. In 2010, Google announced that it would be using loading speed as a ranking factor for desktop searches. In 2018, Google extended this to mobile searches, stating that mobile page speed would be a ranking factor in mobile searches. 

Slow Websites Lose Customers

The importance of loading speed for mobile websites cannot be overstated. Studies have shown that even a delay of a few seconds can have a significant impact on user engagement and conversion rates. A report by Google found that 53% of mobile website visitors will abandon a page if it takes longer than three seconds to load. Furthermore, a one-second delay in loading speed can result in a 7% reduction in conversions.

In addition to its impact on user engagement and conversion rates, loading speed also affects the crawlability of a website. Google’s crawlers are responsible for indexing websites and determining their ranking in organic search. If a website takes too long to load, Google’s crawlers may not be able to crawl all the content on the site, leading to a lower ranking.

By doing so, they can stay ahead of the competition and achieve their online marketing goals.
